Gas boilers are gone.
Since April 2024, every new home in Scotland must use low-temperature heating systems such as air and ground source heat pumps.
That’s a win for sustainability.
But it’s also a challenge for housebuilders.
Because when you change the way homes are heated, you need to change the way floors are built.

Why traditional floors no longer work
Most housebuilders still rely on slab construction or block-and-beam systems.
Both were designed for gas boilers running at 70-80°C.
Not for heat pumps working at 35-50°C.
That mismatch creates real problems:
- Health and safety issues handling infill blocks
- Structural delays that hold back the programme
- Heat loss at wall-floor junctions (poor PSI values)
- Cold homes that need bulky radiators to compensate
- Thick screeds that absorb heat instead of transferring it
In short, traditional floors aren’t regulation-ready.
And they certainly aren’t designed for the Future Homes Standard.

A smarter system for Scotland
When we saw these changes coming, we knew housebuilders would need a new approach.
That’s why ATS, part of the energystore Group, delivers the Super Floor System – a patented, first-to-market solution already used in 1 in 8 new builds across the UK and Ireland.
The system combines energystore superbead® EPS insulation and TLA® (Thermal Lightweight Aggregate) to deliver a floor that is:
- Faster to install
- Smarter in performance
- Fully compliant with Scotland’s new building regulations
As David Crosby, Sales and Innovation Director at ATS, explains:
“There’s almost no site permutation we can’t address. Everything is designed to meet the specific requirements of modern housing.”
How the ATS Super Floor System works
Below the beams
- Energystore superbead® EPS insulation fills every void with zero waste
- Reduces ground heat loss and boosts U-values
- Installs quickly – before or after the kit goes up
Above the beams
Two flexible options depending on programme priorities:
- EPS insulation board – fast build, underfloor heating, and screed laid the same day
- Energystore TLA® – robust, flat finish that lowers embodied carbon
Underfloor heating integration
We work in partnership with Polypipe Underfloor Heating, ensuring the entire system runs efficiently at low flow temperatures.
The result: homes that are warm, efficient, and cheaper to run.
Benefits that build better homes
For housebuilders
- 40% quicker to finishes compared to block-and-beam
- One contractor for insulation, screed, and heating
- Fully insured and warrantied
For homeowners
- U-values of 0.10 or better – regulation-ready as standard
- Even warmth with no cold spots
- Lower energy bills with air source heat pumps
- Cleaner air with less dust circulation
For the environment
- Lower embodied carbon
- Faster carbon payback
- Zero waste on site
The future of housing is here
This is about compliance and building homes that last.
It’s building:
-Homes that are warmer.
-Homes that are ready for the future.
-Homes that are more affordable to run.
The ATS Super Floor System, powered by energystore innovation, is already in place on major housing sites across Scotland.
It’s proven, practical, and regulation-ready.
